30 June 2026: USDA Acreage and Grain Stocks

USDA reported farmers did not decrease corn acres from their March Intentions. They planted as much corn as they said they would in March, 95.3 million acres. The friendly corn news was the corn demand.

June 1 corn stocks at 5.295 billion bushels, 14% above last year, with on-farm holdings up 16% to 2.96 billion. The real story is the less than expected corn stocks. The actual corn inventory was 97 million bushels less than one pre-report estimate and 119 million bushels less than the other pre-report estimate. We all knew corn demand was the strongest we have ever had, but now we know the demand was significantly stronger than the market thought. The March-May disappearance was 3.74 billion bushels, 108 million bushels more than last year which means feed and ethanol demand are expanding.

Do not get too bullish on old crop corn. Many of you recall farmers held a lot of corn in the bins into the summer and the market media reminded us every day how much corn remained in farmers hands. The USDA reports farmers have 2.96 billion bushels on the farms and that is 16% more than a year ago!
