Tidbits
The National Weather Service predicts the Eastern Corn Belt will finally get some dry weather in the next two weeks. Perhaps all the corn will get planted in Indiana and Ohio after all. Tractors were in the West Central Ohio fields yesterday, but the soil is really too wet for a good crop growth. Compaction will be a problem in the Eastern Corn Belt.
Aluísio Pancracio is the owner of Sastra Consultoria based in the municipality of Rio Verde, in the state of Goiás, Brazil. Goiás is southeast of Mato Grosso, the number one corn and bean producing state in Brazil. We asked Aluísio Sunday to give us an update on the safrinha corn crop in his area. He replied yesterday. Here it is:
“The second corn crop is going very well this year in the southwest of Goiás... unlike the last five years, the rain has blessed us... The expectation now, where corn is between R1 and R5, will be the effects of corn stunt, which are already starting to appear... In recent years, we have been losing between 15 and 30% of our productive potential to corn stunt, in addition to losses due to the weather... We are counting on the help of the US to prevent the current dictatorship, implemented with the help of the Biden government, from moving from the current phase of coercion to the bloody phase... fraternal hugs from Brazil.”
Brazil's second corn harvest has begun in Mato Grosso and Parana, with 0.9% of the cultivated area harvested as of last Thursday, down from 2% at the same time last year. Harvesting in other states remains in early stages or is expected to start in mid-June.
