Highlights
Yesterday, Saudi Arabia hosted the first talks between Russia and the U.S. since the start of the war in Ukraine. President Donald Trump commented on their outcome, here are the main points:
Trump called the meeting between the U.S. and Russian delegations ‘very good’ and admitted that after it he became ‘much more confident’ in reaching a deal on a settlement in Ukraine;
Trump said he was not against sending European troops to Ukraine, but there would be no American soldiers on Ukrainian soil;
He was disappointed with Ukraine's position, ‘they had three years to come to the negotiating table,’ the conflict in Ukraine could have been resolved without territorial losses years ago;
He supported the idea of holding elections in Ukraine and noted Zelensky's approval ratings are low.
Zelensky said that Kiev would never accept Russia's ultimatums. Kiev did not know about the preparation of the talks in Saudi Arabia, will not take part in them and will not recognize the results. In addition, Zelensky refused to hold elections before the end of hostilities.
