Highlights

India said it attacked nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistani Kashmir Wednesday early morning. Pakistan reported at least three people died and 12 were injured. The attack occurred amid heightened tensions between the nuclear-armed countries in the aftermath of an attack on a Hindu tourist area in India’s Kashmir area in April in which 26 men were killed, but Pakistan denied that it had anything to do with the killings. A Pakistani military spokesman told broadcaster Geo that Pakistan's response to today’s attack was under way.

Pakistan later retaliated against targets in India. SAMAA TV reported that Pakistan's Air Defence Services shot down five Indian Air Force aircraft. According to India's PTI news agency, the Pakistani army resorted to heavy mortar shelling of villages along the Line of Control.

Muslim-majority Kashmir is claimed in full by both Hindu-majority India and Islamic Pakistan, with each ruling over parts of it. The two nuclear powers have previously fought wars over the Himalayan Kashmir region.
