Tidbits

Flash Sale: Yesterday morning, the USDA announced the sale of 130,000 mts of old crop corn to unknown.

Crops Survey: The USDA plans to survey more farmers for some of its key U.S. crop reports following a drop in the response rate for its March 31 plantings report, being at 37.6%, down from 44.3% last year and the lowest on record for that survey. The USDA faced criticism over the reliability of its data after making unprecedented increases in January to corn acreage estimates for the 2025 crop.

The USDA wants to increase the sample size of farmers surveyed for its June 30 acreage report by about 35%, and by 10% for subsequent reports in September, December and March.

Separately, the USDA plans to launch a yearly report, possibly starting this autumn, on how its forecasts for major crops compared to final totals determined after the end of the marketing year.

Biofuel: A council of U.S. congressional lawmakers is poised to file long-awaited legislation that would allow for year-round, nationwide sales of higher-ethanol E15 gasoline. The agriculture industry has been working for more than a decade to get legislation passed, and it’s failed every time as much of the oil industry has historically pushed back on the efforts, since refiners are burdened with expenses from biofuel blending. If ultimately passed, domestic corn demand could grow by 2-2.5 billion bu. over the next several years.
