Russia-Ukraine: On the surface, Trump’s meeting with President Putin was a total failure. Trump had said he wanted a cease fire in Russia’s war with Ukraine and a framework for a lasting peace. The culture of Eastern Europe and a lack of a Ukrainian representative made Trump’s goals highly unlikely. The anti-Trumper news media is jumping all over this failure. However, Trump and Putin showed friendliness and mutual respect at their press conference. Trump was asked to rate the value of the summit, and he said it was a ten on a scale of one to ten.
After his meeting with Putin, Trump said it was preferable to move directly to a peace deal without a ceasefire first. Reporters on Air Force One said Trump, on his flight from Alaska to Washington, was on the phone with EU leaders and Ukraine’s President Zelensky, who will meet Trump in Washington on Monday.
However, Zelensky does not want the war to end because he will be out of job, lose all his political power, his world stage, and access to money. He declared martial law on 24 February 2022, which suspended presidential elections. Personally, he has nothing to gain with an end to the war. The EU does not want the war to end and has pledged to increase funding to Ukraine and even some EU members have expressed a willingness to send troops.
