U.S. vs Brazil Farm Economy:

Since the U.S.– China trade dispute began in 2018, China has increasingly turned to Brazil for its soybean supplies. That shift was especially clear in 2025, when Chinese purchases of U.S. soybeans fell sharply. The trade numbers reflect it, with Brazil exporting a record 115 million metric tons of soybeans in the 2025/26 marketing year, 61% of global trade, and the U.S. just 41.4 million metric tons.

Soybean farmers in both countries have little control over the prices they receive. Because individual farms sell in the same global market, their ability to compete depends largely on how much it costs them to produce a crop.

The article on Successful Farmer compares input costs across the two countries, using the sample of four soybean farms in Brazil (three in Mato Grosso and one in Paraná) and five in the United States (two in Indiana and one each in Iowa, North Dakota, and Ohio).
