Tomorrow at 11 AM Central time the USDA will release the Planting Intentions for 2026 crops and the Grain Stocks as of 1 March. This is probably the second most important USDA reporting day of the year (after June Stocks and Planted Acreage reports).

Uruguay: Santiago Fernández Camacho is the Managing Director of The Trade Bridge Group of Montevideo, Uruguay, which borders Brazil to the north and Argentina to the west.

We asked Santiago to give an update on agriculture in his area. Here is his reply we received yesterday:

"Happy to give you a quick update from Uruguay.

Weather & Crops: This summer was rough. Large parts of the country went nearly 60 days without significant rainfall, and the government formally extended the agricultural emergency declaration for 90 days across regions in 10 departments. Soybean production is expected to be down roughly 50% compared to last year — one of the sharpest drops in recent memory. Corn is also badly hit, particularly second-crop corn which caught drought stress right at flowering. Some welcome rains arrived in the western region late this month (60–90mm in places), but they came too late to rescue summer crops. The focus is now shifting to the winter campaign (wheat, barley) and livestock, where pasture conditions are slowly improving.

Fuel & Inputs: The government introduced tax certificate relief allowing farmers to use Tax credits for up to 10% of their diesel purchases. Loan deferrals of up to 180 days were also authorized by the Central Bank for rural borrowers. No major fertilizer supply disruptions reported, but tight margins are causing producers to be cautious about input spending heading into the winter season.
