The government shutdown has reached day 30, approaching the record. The longest shutdown in U.S. history of 35 days occurred during Donald Trump's first presidency in 2019. The ongoing one has already cost the U.S. economy $7-14 billion, according to a new report from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

Medicine: Farmers and ranchers could face a major premium hike as expanded Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits expire at year’s end unless Congress acts. Without extensions, premium costs would rise sharply: for example, a rural Iowa farm couple earning about 87,000 could see monthly premiums jump from roughly $630 in 2025 to about $1,803 in 2026. Rural areas would feel the impact most, since about 27% of farmers rely on the ACA marketplace, versus 8% of the general population. Key drivers are the end of enhanced subsidies and reduced insurer participation in rural markets, with some analysts estimating increases of 30–50% or more, compounding next year’s costs for fuel, fertilizer, and other inputs.

Wheat: SovEcon estimates Russia exported 5.1 million mts of wheat in October, above the October five-year average of 4.5 million and up from September’s 4.8 million mts; shipments may surpass averages for the first time since November 2024.
