Tidbits

Corn was not nearly as strong yesterday as soybeans and wheat were for the first time in many weeks. Soybeans and wheat made new highs by substantial margins. September and December corn both made new highs, but not by much. It is simply the first sign of a market that may be nearing a top or it simply needs some new bullish news to propel the price higher.

China buying U.S. corn or confirmation that the corn yield will be near the Pro Farmer number (173.2) rather than the August USDA yield number (180.7) would do the job.

Thurston Genetics’s late August conclusion released yesterday is that the corn crop will yield 174 bushels due to tip-back.

Thurston was founded by Bob Thurston in Olivia, MN to develop and evaluate high yielding corn hybrids for each maturity zone using their extensive testing program. They have been licensing elite corn genetics to retail seed companies since 1993. They have product teams in Crawfordsville, IN; Brookston, IN; Bettendorf, IA; Kalona, IA; Green City, MO; Ogden, IA and Webster, SD. Thurston Genetics have hundreds of crop analysts across the Corn Belt. Several people in the corn seed business say Thurston has the most thorough assessment of the U.S. corn crop every year.

John sent us this message: “Corn Crop in Eastern North Carolina is really bad. Lots of acres being bush hogged.”
