Tidbits
The National Weather Service forecast issued last evening for the next two weeks sees above normal temperatures for most of the 48 states and below normal rainfall extending from the PNW to the Western Corn Belt. Over the weekend, wildfire outbreaks continue to rage in the PNW. Hundreds of thousands of acres have burned across Washington and Oregon alone.
Wheat: The North Dakota wheat tour projected a 48 bushel spring wheat yield. USDA is at 58 bushels yield for the state on 4.5 million acres, the smallest planted area since 1969 and down from 5.1 million last year.
Black Sea traffic: The largest grain handling port on the Black Sea is Odessa, Ukraine which has not received or dispatched a single ship in a 24-hour period for the first time since the summer of 2022, when maritime traffic through the Black Sea corridor was resumed in late July after the war started in February.
As we reported last week, on 19 July, the grain freighter, the Golden Leo, was hit by two Russian missiles as it sailed from Odessa to Turkey with a load of corn. Ten crew members were killed and several reported missing. The vessel was abandoned. The Golden Leo sank yesterday.
