Tidbits

Basis & FOB: Yesterday, we reported to you corn prices at New Orleans, Louisiana (NOLA) and corn at the Pacific Northwest (PNW) ports were the same FOB price, namely $220 per mt. We cannot remember a time when FOB in the PNW was equal to FOB at NOLA. The prices are the same this year because the cost of rail freight to the PNW from the Midwest is covered by the extremely weak basis in the Upper Midwest compared to the Eastern Corn Belt and river outlets coupled with the high cost of barge freight due to ice and low water in the Lower Mississippi restricting barge movement.

Agricultural Outlook Forum is presented every February by the USDA. This year’s forum will be Thursday and Friday at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, VA. The highlights for crop farmers will be preliminary S&D estimates for the 2026 crops. The numbers will not be based on anything other than economists and accountants presenting their best guess on acres with trend yields and demand.

Two years ago, the projected S&D release time was shifted from Friday afternoon to Thursday morning. It looks like that will be the case this year also.

The acreages will be readjusted when the Intended Planted Acres report is released the last business day in March. You are welcome to attend.
