Tidbits

With the Chinese and U.S. trade relationship going down the toilet on Friday and nothing concrete since then, it was quite surprising soybean futures were 1½¢ higher yesterday while corn and wheat settled down 1 to 2¢.

An Indian trade delegation will visit the United States this week as Washington and New Delhi push to finalize a bilateral deal by the fall deadline. India is seeking to increase U.S. natural gas purchases as part of the talks, which previously included concessions such as easing restrictions on importing genetically modified corn and pledges to buy more American defense and energy goods. The two sides had committed to a deal to be completed by this fall.

Brazil’s planting of soybeans reached 14% of the planned area as of Thursday, the third-fastest start for the date in the world’s largest producer, according to AgRural. Farmers aim to sow a little over 48 million hectares (about 118.6 million acres) of soybeans this season. This pace is up from 9% the previous week and ahead of 8% at the same point last year. The first crop corn sowing reached 45% of the projected area in Brazil’s center-south, up from 41% a year earlier.
