British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said yesterday his country will supply Ukraine with 5,000 air defense missiles roughly costing US$2 billion. Starmer hosted a security summit in London Sunday attended by key persons from France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Canada, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Turkey, and Romania. The group will work toward a cease-fire plan to present to the United States as an effort to end the war. Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said European countries must increase military spending to at least 3% of GDP “as the continent faces a historic test in defending itself.”

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Friday Mexico had proposed matching Washington’s tariffs on China and urged Canada to do the same. Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said on Friday that Canada is “open” to talks with the Trump Administration about matching U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports to Canada.

Bessent said, “I think it would be a nice gesture if the Canadians did it also, so in a way we could have ‘Fortress North America’ from the flood of Chinese imports.”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith have also asked that the focus of the U.S. tariffs be on China, rather than American ally Canada.
