The first heat wave of the year continued the third day in the U.S. Southwest on Saturday after setting record highs well above 110 degrees Fahrenheit in California to Arizona.
About half of Arizona and Nevada were under an excessive heat alert. Las Vegas has never been hotter this early in the year. After setting a new record of 111 F (43.8 C) on Thursday, Las Vegas quickly broke another record early Friday afternoon as it hit 110 F (48.3 C) and surpassed the record high for the day set in 2013. In Phoenix, the new record high of 113 F (45 C) on Thursday leapfrogged the old mark of 111 F (44 C) set in 2016. Temperatures are expected to be slightly lower today, but still near all-time highs.
Most of the new jobs in May were added in healthcare (68,000), government (43,000), and leisure and hospitality (42,000).
