Venezuela: Since 2 September, the U.S. military has destroyed 7 small vessels after leaving Venezuela on course to the U.S. because they purportedly were carrying illegal drugs. One of them was a submarine this past week.
The past two months, the U.S. has moved a considerable amount of military hardware to locations very near Venezuela, including B-2 Stealth bombers and B-52 bombers flying off Venezuela’s coast nearly every day this past week near the two islands where major Venezuela military bases are located. The build-up is framed as a counter-narcotics operation, but widely analyzed to put pressure on the Venezuelan government to do Trump’s will in human rights, trade negotiations, and drug control.
This is the largest U.S. military presence in the area in decades with approximately 10,000 troops having been moved to the region, along with dozens of ships, aircraft, and other hardware. Military presence includes 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (about 4,500 Marines with a lot of equipment). Meanwhile, more than 300 Marines recently arrived in Puerto Rico and the Special Operations Forces, Rangers, and elements of the 82nd Airborne Division in Ft. Bragg, NC are on alert for rapid deployment.
